Ledbury RFC 1st XV pulled off a thrilling comeback 30-27 victory over Ludlow.

After a tough loss to Cheltenham the previous week, Ledbury faced second-placed Ludlow at home on Saturday (October 26) with several changes to the team.

Jack Hughes was selected at fly-half and made a significant impact during the match.

The game started on a perfect, but heavy pitch under glorious sunshine.

Both teams appeared edgy in the first quarter.

Ledbury conceded unnecessary penalties, giving possession back to Ludlow, which led to a try for Rhys Perkins.

Despite the early setback, Ledbury responded well.

The forwards and backs worked together nicely, and after several phases of play, Iolo Bubb made a key pass to Zac Bonfield, who scored between the sticks before Hughes added the extras.

After Ludlow were penalised for offside, Hughes converted the penalty to give Ledbury a narrow lead.

In the last five minutes of the first half, Ledbury gained even more momentum.

After a drop goal attempt from Bubb, winger Lewis Turner touched down after Ledbury tired out the Ludlow defenders, before Hughes converted.

Entering the second half, Ledbury knew a ten-point margin was not enough.

Ludlow fought back, scoring a try in the corner and another shortly after, equalising at 17-17.

Ludlow continued to press, scoring again to take the lead.

A yellow card for Charlie Barber-Starkey allowed Ludlow to score again, extending their lead even further to 27-17.

However, Ledbury rallied and scored through Tom Manning after a Hughes penalty.

Following a near miss, Hughes showed he still had his kicking boots on as he brought the scores level with a penalty.

With time running out, a high tackle gave the fly-half a chance to win the match in the dying seconds from distance.

Hughes successfully slotted the penalty from 40 metres, securing the victory, and moving Ledbury up two positions in the league.

This Saturday (November 2) Ledbury will have a league break, but will instead show the England vs New Zealand match at 3.10pm on the big screen in the Pavilion Rooms.
