ROAD closures on a crucial route between Malvern and Ledbury will continue into next December.

And a campaigner who has been fighting to speed up the works on the A449 Wells Road, near British Camp Car Park, has slammed the move as 'not good enough'.

Cllr Malcolm Victory, who has been campaigning to get work completed and the road opened more quickly, added he wouldn't be surprised to see a fatality after more incidents on the road since work first started.

These latest works will see Worcestershire County Council repairing damage to a retaining wall.

After 13 months, temporary traffic lights were removed in June after a temporary walkway was installed over the voided section of the footway.

However, work will now be taking place in the area next year to repair the wall.

The work will be completed in two phases because there is a mains gas pipe that needs to be diverted initially to move it away from the retaining wall to the opposite side of the carriageway.

This will mean a road closure in April 2025, which is thought to last between four and five weeks.

Phase two of these works will be completed between September and December 2025 and will focus on repairing the retaining wall.

Finer details are not confirmed as yet but this work will result in a combination of road closure and temporary traffic lights.

These months have been picked to avoid peak tourism season over the summer.

Cllr Malcolm Victory told the Gazette: "I was pleased to be instrumental in the removal of the long-standing traffic lights but this really is not good enough.

"Two years after the initial damage, it will be another 12 months minimum of disruption and delay before the road is back to full service.

"In the meanwhile, there have been two more accidents damaging the railing further downhill.

"I would not be surprised to see a fatality occur, as the ground on the other side is more like a cliff."

Worcestershire County Council has confirmed the dates for the work were correct and the finer details and dates will be finalised and confirmed in due course.

The authority was unavailable for further comment on Cllr Victory's comments.
