A DOG seen running around the M5 caused panic as a desperate scramble ensued to bring it to safety.

The dog, believed to be a white poodle, was being tracked along the M5 by police, National Highways and members of the public on Saturday, November 2.

Panicked onlookers managed to get lifts from strangers as they tried to catch the dog.

One woman took to the Worcestershire Noticeboard Facebook page, where she said: "To the owner of the dog on the M5 just before the Droitwich junction, every ounce of my being is praying that you collect your dog safely.

"I tried my best to get him with another lady jumping out and attempting to catch him.

"I was with the many cars that tried to keep your baby safe, my faith in humans grew in that moment."

Another said a woman gave her a lift up the hard shoulder in her car trying to catch the dog.

National Highways received initial reports from West Mercia Police at 5.19pm on Saturday of a white poodle seen near the M5.

Around 25 minutes later, crews received further reports that the dog had been seen by the southbound carriageway near junction 4a for Catshill.

National Highways traffic crews and police, supported by members of the public, went to try and find the dog, however, it is believed to have run away from the area and could not be located at that time.

However, at 7.35pm, National Highways received a further report that the dog had been seen near junction 5 for Rashwood.

However, after another search, it is believed to have made its way away from the motorway and towards the surrounding area.

West Mercia Police, which has jurisdiction over the area, then continued to try and find the dog.

West Mercia Police were unavailable for comment.
