PART of the M5 is likely to remain in place throughout the day due to concern for someone's welfare.
All lanes are closed on the M5 between Junction 8 (M50) and Junction 9 (Tewkesbury).
Gloucestershire Police is now leading an operation there after being called at shortly after 6am this morning (Saturday, November 2).
There are currently delays of more than 45 minutes on approach to the northbound closure.
A Gloucestershire Police spokesperson said: "The M5 has been closed in both directions between junctions 9 and 8 due to a police incident this morning (Saturday, November 2).
"Officers were called to junction 9 northbound shortly after 6.05am following concerns for the welfare of an individual.
"A closure is in place while emergency services remain at the scene.
"Motorists are asked to avoid the area and find alternative routes."
National Highways added: "The M5 remains closed in both directions between J9 Tewkesbury and J8 Strensham following this morning's serious incident.
"Closure likely to remain in place throughout the day.
"Delays in excess of 45 minutes on approach to the northbound closure."
