A former sheltered housing site is being transformed into 20 affordable homes in a village.

Two Rivers Housing has partnered with Harper Group to redevelop the Johnstone Close site in Staunton.

The project will provide 14 homes for social rent and six for shared ownership.

The homes will be a mix of two- and three-bedroom houses, along with one-bedroom flats and bungalows.

The original buildings on the site were deemed in need of redesign and modernisation, prompting the housing company to consult with tenants in 2019.

As a result of these consultations, the decision was made to redevelop the site.

This was followed by further consultations with residents to develop a plan that would better meet the community's housing needs.

The project received planning permission from the Forest of Dean District Council in 2022, and earlier this year, the company secured a grant from Homes England to help fund the development.

Terri Hibberd, the firm's development manager, said: "There is a real need for affordable family homes in Staunton.

"After years of planning, the regeneration of Johnstone Close will allow us to make better use of the site and support the housing needs of the local community.

"It's fantastic to see the demolition begin, as the first step to providing these new homes, which are so desperately needed."

The regeneration of the site is now underway, with demolition having started, ready for the construction of the new homes.

Andrew Chadd, construction director from Harper Group, said: "We are delighted to be working with Two Rivers Housing again to deliver this project.

"The regeneration of Johnstone Close will provide much-needed affordable homes for families in the area and we are excited to have the opportunity to provide more good quality, affordable, sustainable homes for families in Gloucestershire."
