PLANS to tackle floods that have long blighted a Ledbury road have been announced after the town was battered by rain.

The onslaught of rain saw the Ledbury to Dymock Road among many streets be completely flooded, while nearby fields were also impacted, despite work taking place in recent months.

Recent works to combat floods were nearly powerless to prevent the washout from further flooding.

One woman whose fields were flooded by the rain took to social media to show shocking images of the water pouring from her land onto Dymock Road.

She said: "Here we are again, our fields are totally flooded, despite the supposed answer to the problem."

The road was battered by Storm Henk in January prompting Cllr Stef Simmonds to push for funding to find engineering solutions to help solve the flooding issue.

Drainage engineering works, the reinstatement of edging and road resurfacing works were completed in May.

Sections of drainage were also cleared out by local landowners on private land. 

Ledbury South Cllr Stef Simmons told the Reporter: "Funds to do the last piece of work on the Dymock Rd have been applied for under the Parish Drainage fund that closes applications on September 27.

"This will involve the construction of a new headwall and trash screen.

"However in excess rainfall, it is still likely that flood water will overwhelm the pipe capacity but this should prevent standing water from remaining on the highway."

This week, we have seen a mixture of yellow and amber weather warnings in Ledbury.

The downpour on Friday saw Ledbury in chaos with many floods on the roads.

One woman said she couldn't believe her eyes as she posted a video of her flooded garden on the Voice of Ledbury Facebook page.

Barnett Avenue was also badly impacted by the rain.

Richard Macpherson, who lives nearby, told the reporter that the road always floods when there is a torrential downpour.

The A449 at Chances Pitch, between Malvern and Ledbury, was first closed due to flooding overnight and remained shut on Saturday morning.

A flood alert has also been in place for the River Leadon for most of the week with Ledbury among the areas that were at risk of being impacted.

Cllr Simmons added: “The storm on Friday led to almost a month's worth of rain falling on Ledbury in under an hour. 

“This overwhelmed the combined surface water and sewer network. 

“For those homes or businesses who have suffered damage, there is support available.”
