A new survey has revealed that a fifth of small business owners and sole traders have taken no annual leave this year.

Direct Line Business Insurance's research found that 19 per cent have taken no time off, that only an average of 13 days of annual leave are taken, and that 26 per cent of business owners feel guilty taking time off.

Furthermore, it highlighted that whilst on leave, 30 per cent of respondents struggle to 'switch off' from work, spending around 44 minutes each day answering work calls or emails.

Over a third indicated that it is too difficult to take holidays due to a loss of income, while a similar proportion worried about losing customers.

Alison Traboulsi, SME product manager at Direct Line Business Insurance, said: "It's essential for business owners to prioritize their health and well-being by taking time off.

"Even short, well-planned breaks can make a significant difference, allowing owners to return with renewed energy and focus."
