THE Green Party has achieved 'one of the biggest electoral upsets in British history' as their candidate won in what had been considered a safe seat for the Conservatives.

Ellie Chowns has won the North Herefordshire seat for the Green Party, defeating the Conservative Party's Bill Wiggin.

Sir Bill Wiggin has lost out on holding the seat which he has occupied since 2010, and before that as the Leominster MP since 1997.

Dr Chowns received 21,736 votes, with Sir Bill Wiggin just behind on 15,842 votes.

Andy Dye of Reform UK was in third at 8,048, followed by Jon Browning of Labour on 3,205.

Dr Chowns said: “The people of North Herefordshire have voted for real hope, and real change. Together we have made history here.

"There is an enormous amount of work to do – to renew our economy, to repair our NHS, and to restore our rivers. I am ready to roll my sleeves up and give this job everything I’ve got, and I can’t wait to get started.”

The result for the Green Party almost equals the largest majority ever overturned in a single seat at a general election.

The Green Party described the victory as 'one of the biggest electoral upsets in British political history'

The constituency was a ‘safe seat’ for the Conservatives, with Sir Bill receiving almost 63 per cent of votes in 2019.

It was one of the Green Party’s top four target seats at this General Election.
