A RETIRED postman died at Hereford County Hospital after an accident in his home, with his family expressing "concern" about the time it took for an ambulance to take him to hospital.

Colin David Murch, 87, died on March 8 at the hospital after suffering poly-trauma as a result of a fall.

He had fallen down the stairs in his home and was found by his daughter who called an ambulance.

In a statement at an inquest held in Hereford town hall on May 17, his daughter said: "I found my dad lying on his stomach with blood coming from his head.

"I was concerned that there was no sign of an ambulance. After they got him into the ambulance, there was a half an hour gap before they left home."

Coroner Mark Bricknell said that the cause of death was poly-trauma with underlying illness as Mr Murch was found to be suffering from sepsis. He did not suggest that ambulance wait times played any part in Mr Murch's death.

Mr Murch, who lived in Brecon in an annexe at his daughter's property, was also suffering from a wound on the right side of his head and fractures of his spine.

For most of his married life he lived in Devon, but had moved to Brecon in recent years to be near his daughter. He had worked as a postman before his retirement.

Mr Bricknell attributed Mr Murch's death to his accidental fall.
