THE net is closing on drivers flouting road closures in one Herefordshire town, with police stepping up patrols.

Major roadworks are taking place at Ledbury's Top Cross this week, with drivers previously warned that the road would be closed from February 11 to February 17.

Knapp Lane is also closed until February 17, while the Top Cross closure will be followed by two weeks of four-way lights.

But, police said, drivers have been ignoring the road closures in the town, with other reports received about excessive speed and antisocial driving on diversion routes.

"In addition to the closure at Top Cross junction, Knapp Lane and Cut Throat Lane have been closed to avoid large volumes of traffic using it as a cut-through," a police spokesperson said.

"We have received reports of some motorists physically removing the 'road closed' signs and driving over the pavements."

The spokesperson said officers will be patrolling the area around the A449/A438 Top Cross junction, Knapp Lane and Cut Throat Lane, and local roads in Bradlow and Wellington Heath.

"Motorists found to be ignoring road closures, speeding, or driving in an antisocial manner risk prosecution," the spokesperson said.
