DO you remember the Crystal Rooms in Hereford?

The nightclub in Bridge Street was open throughout much of the latter half of the 20th century but is most known for playing an important part in the 1990s and early 2000s dance music movement, with revellers attending in masses to enjoy hard house, techno, drum 'n' bass, hardcore and acid house dance music.

The ‘naughty but nice’ club night on Fridays gained a massive cult following and was declared the longest-running club night operating from the same venue in the country in 2003.

The party came to an end in 2004 when the owner decided to sell the premises, with permission being given to convert the site into luxury flats.

Members of We Grew Up in Herefordshire have been sharing memories and reminiscing about the long-lost Hereford club.

Plenty of people remember seeing big names such as Eartha Kitt and Bob Monkhouse performing at the Crystal Rooms. Richard Ferguson recalls seeing Adge Cutler and the Wurzels, Bert Weedon, and getting up to groove on stage with Dana Rosemary Scallon.

Elizabeth Clarke said: “It was lovely to get dressed up to go there, long dresses. So exciting to see the ‘stars’, had a hen night there, seeing Billy J Kramer.”

Oddly, the state of the carpets has stuck in the minds of locals, with Rose Holder commenting on the ‘good old sticky carpets’ and Cheryl Oseman musing about ‘sticky carpets and Chicken and chips in the basket’.

Others were not so nostalgic, however, Michael Lyons said: “Sticky carpets everywhere, grotty place.”
