The headteacher of Ledbury’s secondary school says students “thoroughly deserve” the strong A-level results they have achieved.

Andy Evans also pointed out that the 2023 examinations are the first set of papers with no adjustment made for the Covid pandemic since 2019.

Year 13 students at John Masefield High School received consistently strong A-level results on Thursday morning.

The pass rate for A-levels was 99.2% and over three quarters of examination entries resulted in grade C or higher.

On the back of these results the vast majority of students will go on to their first- choice universities and can be extremely proud of how well they have achieved.

A-level subject highlights include:

Of the 24 candidates for mathematics, 11 students achieved A* or A grades

All three candidates achieved an A grade in German

In each of English Literature, Extended Project Qualification, Physics and Psychology at least two thirds of candidates achieved A and B grades

Results in vocational qualifications are even stronger. Of the 37 entries, more than half of the candidates achieved the top grade of a starred distinction, 95% achieved merits or higher grades and the pass rate was 100%.

All subjects had strong results, but IT where there were 15 students achieving starred distinctions was exceptional

Mr Evans said: “Students worked hard, showed initiative and were taught by skillful and dedicated teachers.

“They thoroughly deserve the good results they achieved and I would like to wish all our Y13 students health, happiness and success in the next phase of their lives.”
