Have you been watching the rising stars of tennis during the recent Wimbledon Championships?
What a thrill to see the incredibly talented Carlos Alcaraz, already such an accomplished player at just 20 years old, winning this years men’s final.
Some of you might remember way back in 1976, when Bjorn Borg became Wimbledon champion, at exactly the same age.
This year’s youngest Championship player was 16 year-old Mirra Andreeva; a reminder perhaps that another teenager, Martina Hingis, became the 1997 Wimbledon Ladies Champion when she was also just 16 years of age.
And who could have predicted this year’s Ladies Champion, Markéta Vondroušová; the first unseeded Wimbledon finalist for 60 years, since Billie Jean King in 1963!
What all of these young professional tennis players have in common, is that they started playing tennis on local courts, close to their home, at a very young age.
Ledbury Tennis Club, in association with Malvern Tennis Academy, is delighted to offer local youngsters a similar start this August, with a choice of two five-day Junior Summer Camps commencing on Monday August 7 and Monday August 21.
Mini players aged from 4 to 7 or 8 will enjoy one hour sessions from 9.30 to 10.30 a.m. Those aged 8 to 16 play for two hours from 10.30 to 12.30
These training camps are are great fun and are designed to help young players to improve their tennis in an enjoyable environment, whatever their age or experience. Full week attendance is recommended, although if this is impossible, applications will be accepted for a shorter number of sessions.
All sessions will take place outdoors with enthusiastic and fully qualified LTA accredited coaches, who all hold a current DBS Enhanced Disclosure Certificate. Places are limited, so for further information please look online at clubspark.lta.org.uk/ledburytennisclub or telephone 01684 574435
