THE Association is pleased to announce the first winner of the Andy Ward Memorial Trophy.
Entries were invited from local amateur photographers to submit their favourite pictures of previous Carnivals. Mr Ward was a prolific photographer himself, having taken photos of many other community events.
The winning entry of 'Jack in the box' was entered into the Fancy Dress Class, in an outfit made by her mother, of the 1955 carnival, by Mrs Brenda Hill, a popular and life-long resident of the town.
Brenda first met Andy shortly after he moved to Ledbury to take over the running of the Talbot Hotel in New Street. Appropriately, they first met at a Carnival meeting when she was chaperone to the Carnival Princess and Andy was photographer for the event.
Over the years, Andy had taken numerous photographs of Brenda in her role as chaperone and regularly contacted her when he had particularly beautiful and enlarged pictures he thought she would appreciate and enjoy.
She remembers Andy as a 'jolly man' and life and soul of the party.
Mrs Hill said she was surprised and delighted to be the chosen winner and would be proud to be the first name engraved on the new trophy. The day she will receive the trophy, (as yet to be arranged) will be of
mixed emotions.
Honour to be the chosen winner but sadness that Andy will not be there to photograph the event.
Congratulations Brenda.
