THE 8th Ledbury Community Day warmed up a chilly June day last Saturday (4th June) – this time as part of Ledbury’s contribution to The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Weekend and national Volunteers’ Week.
Back after 3 years this event featured over 50 groups and organisations which serve Ledbury and district in all kinds of ways at the Burgage, Community and St Katherine’s Halls and at venues in the Town.
Voluntary Groups reported lots of interest and their pleasure with the contacts they made – a key purpose of this event.
Popular attractions included trying bell ringing with Ledbury and District Bell Ringers, the Ledbury Community Band playing and the Community Choir singing under the Market House.  Channel 4 TV cameras were at the Community Hall filming the community contribution of the Repair Café Ledbury.
Church bells rang before Ledbury Town Mayor, Councillor Phillip Howells opened the event, accompanied by Peder the Town Crier and the Carnival Court.  In keeping with the Jubilee Weekend, the Band then played the National Anthem.
Paul Kinnaird, chairman of the organising committee, said, “We were apprehensive about the level of interest after 3 years but everyone has risen to the occasion in putting on show “the best of Ledbury”.  Despite the wind and chill, many members of the public came, demonstrating the need for such an event.
“Special thanks go to all the volunteer stewards that contributed to the successful day, and to our sponsors Ledbury Town Council and Eastnor Lodge Charity without whom none of this would be possible.

The Platinum Jubilee proved to be a busy time for the Carnival Princess and her Attendants beginning on Friday when they were invited to present prizes to the winners of the ‘Decorated Hat’ competition during the Picnic in the Rec ran by Ledbury Town Council.
On Saturday they visited the Royal British Legion, Twinning and Carnival Stands calling in for tea and cake kindly supplied by members of the Earl Haig Poppy Appeal.
They particularly enjoyed the cakes and had a good giggle at the old Carnival photographs.
After opening Community Day with the Mayor, Councillor Phillip Howells, they enjoyed look around the stalls who were showing their activities to the Public.
To finish the weekend, Monday Afternoon was spent at the Pound Meadow/ Pound Close Street Party where they cut the cake, looked on by the aptly named Mrs Diamond much to the delight of the residents.
