MP Bill Wiggin says the decision by Herefordshire Council to step back from plans to merge councty schools is a "victory for common sense".
"Well done Roger Phillips for stepping in and stopping the Government-backed attack," he said.
"I was right to criticize the original plan, indeed I was furious when I first discovered what was proposed.
"I have supported all the excellent campaigns by parents to protect their children's future education.
"However now our elected representatives have stopped this plan we shall have to consider most carefully what we do next.
"We should be grateful that our elected Conservative councillors have asserted their control and ensured that the people and their children are protected from hare-brained Government initiatives.
"Typically the Government is offering money with strings attached. We need to see what good it will do and what the consequences are.
"Will every school will be needed? Are the figures right? When we know for sure, we will play our part with proper discussions, ensuring proper provision and clearer choices.
"The reason Herefordshire schools turn out such great results is that they are supported by great parents who bring up their children to recognise that education does more than educate, it empowers. We need to support that process with constructive and helpful exchanges to ensure our fine and proud record in education not only continues, but goes from strength to strength."
