A MEETING discussing the closure of Ledbury’s public toilets along with cuts to Herefordshire’s library services will be held next Friday.
Herefordshire Council’s cabinet was expected to approve the principle of significant cuts to library and museum funding. but the matter will now be debated by full council next week, leaving approval of the principle up to a cross-party vote.
The cancelled meeting came amid growing anger over the future of library services.
The Unison union said a funding cut – believed to be around 75 per cent – would “almost certainly” see Hereford central library the only one in the county to survive. An online petition against the cuts has attracted 3,000 signatures.
The council has neither confirmed nor denied the figures, issuing a statement saying that any alternatives to present provision are “only at the proposal stage”.
The authority is to work with other public bodies and community organisations to find a sustainable future.
The council has confirmed that its 20 public loos in the county will close. Letters have been sent out inviting businesses to open their toilets to the public. The Olive Tree in Ledbury is understood to have rejected the idea.
